Have a Stunningly Savage Halloween

Happy Halloween folks, it makes me very happy indeed to bring you some spooktaculer news regarding a new factory set that features some horrificlly good art!

Stunningly Savage is a set bringing Rick Meltons fantastic art to cardboard. If you like Horror then you probably already know of Rick, his work adorns countless DVD covers, Magazines and Books (along with mouse-mats, mugs, t-shirts and a host of other tasteless junk high quality merchandise for the discerning collector!). Little bits of cardboard seem like a natural fit, and a good way for him to make some quick cash selling the same old images again. and a fantastic way to bring his art to a whole new audience!

Seriously though his stuff is awesome and we are very pleased to be able to bring some of his paintings into the trading card market.

This limited factory set will contain some brilliant images along with some very cool chase cards, but we cant tell you about it all just yet. Yes there WILL be some limited sketches, including a random smattering of his one of a kind oil panted cards and a few of his ultra fine detail pencil sketches, like this one.

Your first chance to hold a sample of this new series will come in November at the UK Memorabilia convention, when we distribute 2 awesome promo cards. We will be set up and handing out P2 which you can see below. This is half of an image, in order to obtain the FULL image you need to stop by and visit the nice folks at the NonSport Update table, who will have a limited amount of P1 cards! They have come a long way so go see them and subscribe to there wonderful mag. You can see the P1 card on the NSU Blog

Rick Melton will not be at the show but he will have some cards after the event, and you can (read should) check out his NSFW site stunninglysavage to see more of his work. You can also (warning shameless plug)  head over to his other also NSFW shop stunninglysavage-tshirts and find a lot of his stuff on shirts and mugs.  Thats right you two can drink from a mug featuring a half naked woman holding the severed head of a man.  Tasteful… The gift that says it may not be safe for you to play with others…

We are working very very hard to try and get this set out before Christmas but it may slip to Jan. More details will be coming out in the next few days and pre-orders on this will be essential as we are producing less than 750 sets, all of which will be numbered.

Keep your eyes open for for more news and perhaps an extra card or two coming out in the next few weeks….

Oh and we better mention this now, like most of Ricks work this set is intended for adult collectors, the images and subject matter are not suitable for anyone….. under the age of 18, the set will contain nudity and as one would expect with horror art, violence/gore. It’s not in good taste but it sure is pretty. Happy Halloween folks.

Late Updates:

Lets head right in: Sorry for the lack of updates , it’s been a busy time for us on a number of fronts! We will be attending Memorabilia in Birmingham November 19-20th and the NEC. Tables F1 16 and 17. We will have some interesting stuff with us and folks at NSU will also have an exclusive of some sort.

At the moment Age of Sorcery is winging it’s way to a number of customers and dealers, after a number of delays this set is hitting the street now. The delay is a culmination of factors, and has had a knock on effect for several products. As of now War of the Worlds is on hold, this set is close to completion, and it WILL be coming out, however the timing has changed. We are instead working on a War of the Worlds set that covers the Jeff Wayne musical. At the moment production proofs of a P1 Promo have been sent away for approval. This set opens up a great deal of potential autographs and other exciting premium inserts, and we hope to make it the first of several new War of the Worlds products. If for some reason this set halts we will swap to our original product which at this stage we could bring to market within 2 months.

The art of J.D. Seeber is one of the sets I am asked about most often at this point, yes it is still coming out! It has also been delayed, this is simply due to J.D’s work commitments, he is a talented and popular guy, and rather than cut corners and rush sketch card he is taking his time. The upshot is more sketch cards will be going into this limited product, and you can expect a P2 promo card very soon.

Dixon’s Vixens Series II is in the works and may well be with us before the end of the year. Look out for a cool trading card game next year! Details about that will come out in due course.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a new set due in 2012 which is going to cover the first 12 Conan Doyle short stories. This is the first of several sets that will in time encompass all of the official Sherlock Holmes stories. These sets will include a range of exciting inserts, including sketch cards, props and autographs from actors who have portrayed Holmes or related characters over the years. Diverging from from the official stories we have some other Holmes related merchandise coming soon, including a fantastic set from Robert Hack, “The Adventure of the Martian Mystery”

Also in time for Christmas we are re-releasing Sherlock Holmes and Victorian Crime as a factory set! For those that missed it the first time this is a chance to obtain the second edition. This second edition is limited to 200 numbered sets and comes with corresponding numbered MC1 and MC2 cards along with the MZF card 19. Some packs have extras, (the odd sketch has slipped in approx: 1:30 packs. This set is very limited and will be available at Memorabilia in November for £9.99, some dealers may have limited stock before this.

Military Propaganda & Poster Series 1 is moving forward rapidly.  The new P2 and P3 promos will be available shortly and pre orders will open in November for a shipping date of Jan. This is limited to only 1,000 sets worldwide and interest has been very very strong. RRP will be between £16-£20 ($25-$30). It’s going to be a 36 card factory set with a lot of chase cards and we have a number of interesting redemption items including some very high quality reproduction posters, and most excitingly some authentic vintage posters and memorabilia to give away. Below is a small selection.

In addition to these, we have several others in the pipeline, including some very exciting comic related sets which I hope to be able to officially announce soon! We are also going to be looking for artists to work on upcoming sets, and we will be a lot more organised about this. I will post some specific contact details here and on Scoundrel later in the week.

In other news, we are in the process of moving the office and home so things are very chaotic, while packing and moving we discovered substantial water damaged to a number of things, including about £1000.00+ worth of promo cards from my personal collection that sadly have been thrown in the trash. A very very bad day indeed, as this was a collection that had taken 10+ years to amass. Keep your cards in plastic boxes folks! You never know when disaster will strike.

I am desperate to talk about the new Upper Deck lawsuits sadly I just don’t have the time to do it justice. Sufficed to say it became clear in the Upper Deck USA counter suit that Richard McWilliam was officially a pill-popping alcoholic. Interesting defence tactic… I don’t have enough time to do the story justice at this point, but Paul Lesko over at The Cardboard Connection is covering it in detail. Sadly he’s a lot nicer about it than I would be, but if you haven’t read it you really should, his Law of Cards is always a great read!

Dark Zodiac

Jack Redd is a busy guy, and that’s an understatement. As most sketch card collectors and readers of this site will know he’s a very talented illustrator. He has worked on some high profile sets, and recently created a new card sized digest magazine called sketch life, which is very very good, oh and he’s started publishing his own card set.  I have seen a lot of card products but this one really is something different and innovative. Jack has created a set of cards around the zodiac, two basic cards for each star sign and two harder to find chase cards for each month as well. Add into that sketch cards and your looking at a very interesting set.

The release is staggered over the 12 months, and the packs are limited to just 1000 every month. Each pack will contain  both basic cards making this an easy and affordable basic set (they are £1.50 ($2.40) per pack) but you also have the chance to obtain the chase cards (two per month) at a ratio of 1:5 packs and the sketches fall at 1:10 packs

Every month Jack illustrates one of the basic cards and has a guest artist illustrate another,  keeping the subject fresh and the set full of different styles. The first packs were Aries (pictured above) and they sold out very very quickly, which is only to be expected when you see the cards themselves. They are very high quality with a double gloss coating that really accentuates the detailed art. The image on the left shows both the basic cards and one of the chase (white background)  cards from the now sold out Aries instalment. We are going to be giving away some sets of basic cards to a few lucky winners.

If you want to win a set of Dark Zodiac Aries basic cards you have to do a little work, you can send your twitter followers to this page by re-tweeting the article, Like and repost it on facebook, or if you don’t do that social media stuff simply post in the comments. All winners will receive the two card basic set AND some extra bonuses from around the Cult-Stuff offices. The competition will close whenever we get around to closing it, so act fast! Winners will be chosen at random and we will attempt to chose at least one from the comments, facebook and twitter. Feel free to enter in as many ways as you wish.

Don’t forget to check out the official ReddLife site for updates on both the SketchLife  magazine and the Dark Zodiac sets.

News Round-up

We seem to be ticking along at around 1 update a month which really is fairly poor, so I am going to be making more of an effort to get some news and information out on the site more regularly. We may be bringing some other folks in to write articles for the site to help with that.

Lets get to some updates!

The biggest news story in cards in the last few months has to be Cryptozoic:

These guys have only released one card (with spotty distribution) in the non sport market (at the time of writing this) but they are already making a LOT of waves with one of the strongest entertainment lineups in the industry. Sets due from them include: The Walking Dead, Fringe, Smallville, The Big Bang Theory, Vampire Diaries, and of course the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund Liberty Trading card series which has one a hell of a line up. The card already released is a CBLDF promo given away at a few comic shops last Saturday at the Free Comic Book Day event. This is a fantastic set and we are going to talk a lot more about in upcoming article.  For now lets play good news bad news! The Cryptozoic edition:

Good News:
Many of the new entertainment product packs have an RRP of $3.50 in the USA,  for those outside the US the news on pricing and availability is less clear. This is what we know: North America is good with all the sets they have planned, in adition to this Cryptozoic have a worldwide distribution networks in place to deal with the release of their gaming products (the largest of which is clearly World of Warcraft cards) and I would imagine they could use this for distribution of the Non Sport cards, and indeed they are doing this with the fantastic new Walking Dead series which has been cleared for worldwide distribution. It has autographs, costumes and now sketches as well!

This is fantastic it could mean a big boost for trading cards in non US outlets. The UK market for one example is simply inundated with overpriced crap that offers no real value, and pointless sudo-sets disguised as “games” that offer nothing but overpriced poor quality fodder for the trash.  So far none of the larger companies have shown an interested in producing hobby market products or exploring the market, and the smaller companies find it very difficult to get into retail outlets. Most comic shops in the UK do not stock anything but gaming cards. Cryptozoic can with one stroke infiltrate these markets with the Walking Dead cards. I really hope they do, if nothing else to show the vibrant international market is still here waiting to be exploited. Cards back in hobby and comic shops would be a great thing to see, and Cryptozoic deserve a great deal of credit for pulling that off.

Bad News:
We found out very quickly that the Walking Dead was avlable internationaly, so the assumption was the other sets would be as well. Unfortunately while The Walking Dead is cleared for sale outside North America NONE of the other big entertainment sets have been, and I am told it is very unlikely (read not going to happen) this can or will change. That’s right folks no Big Bang Theory, Fringe or anything else outside North America. This is extremely disappointing for a lot of people who are looking forward to these sets, but that’s licensing these days. Geographic restrictions are added even though it will cost money. The rest of the world will not produce a set of cards for these shows, the cost of licensing compared to the return makes it fiscally unworkable. Regional licensing is sadly only going to become more of a problem in the future. This means a lot of Gray Market imports, hopefully Crypotozoic will produce enough to “inadvertently” support this, but expect prices to be high for anyone outside the US and Canada, and don’t expect to see them in shops. It’s good to see these cards being made however even if they are not as available as some would wish.

While I think it’s great to have a new and clearly well funded company entering the market, they seem a little TV top heavy. With most companies that might be a cause for concern. Over investment in one area never seems to work out well, and a few poor licensing choices can end a company (inkworks suffered from this when a number of films failed to live up-to expectation). That said Cryptozoic as mentioned above already has a profitable gaming card business, so they have a leg up on many in the industry and are well capitalized. Cryptozoic are also going to be at the Philly Non Sport show (14th and 15th of May) with a bunch if promos and apparently some new announcements, which should be exciting. I would predict at least one announcement to be that they have new autographs for Big Bang Theory. It’s nice to see someone making cards the fans so clearly want.

While we are talking about the Philly Show you should really check out the Philly web page put together by our good friends over at the Non Sport Update Magazine to see what cool promos are coming out from this show, we even have two exclusives that will be given away! It’s going to be a mammoth show so go if you can!

Unstoppable Cards

Another new company has appeared in the form of Unstoppable Cards, and they are working hard to bring out a new premium pack product around Night of the Living Dead. While this company has ties to and with another UK card manufacturer that has had a fair share of controversy it has a number of new people involved so we wish them all the best, and will cover the set and subsequent products with interest!

Upper Deck

I just cant bring myself to describe the insanity of there recent decision making. I would refer you to the thread on the NSU forums located here: It covers the whole sad situation.

Saddlittles

I don’t know much about Nathan or the company, I have some of there products and enjoyed the basic sets a great deal, but something is clearly going on because Nathan who was given the honorary position of Moderator at the Scoundrel Art Community for the saddlittels forum they created for his company. This was a popular and thriving part of the community with a large amount of fan contributed resources and information about the saddlittles sets and products. For reasons that have not been explained Nathan decided not only to delete all his own posts but EVERYTHING in the saddlittles forum.  This is covered in this post. Listen I don’t know the whole story I fully admit that, but a lot of folks contributed to that forum and it’s sad that all of that is gone. The other knock on effect of course is that Scoundrel are having to consider much more carefully which companies they will allow to have forums on the site.

Unfortunately that seems to mean we may not be welcomed onto the board in the same way other companies have been in the past.  Scoundrel is still a fantastic place for people to interact with artists, collectors and companies and I would urge anyone who is interested in sketch cards to look at it if they haven’t already.

Redd Life:

The new Dark Zodiac set has been a resounding success, the first packs (Aries) have totally sold out and Taurus ships shortly! They can be ordered here

Asylum Studios

And last on the round up for today a new forum has opened for Asylum Studios, it has some very very talented artists involved and hey they have a Cult-Stuff form. A lot of these guys have worked or are going to work with us, but you shouldn’t hold that against them, go check out the site! Asylum Studios
